Edward was born in New York, New York, on September 4, 1939. He was the son of Mortimer and Helen Landesman. Ed served in the military during the Vietnam era and after leaving the Army he met the love of his life, also named Helen, at a resort in upstate New York in 1964 and they married in 1966. Throughout their 57-year marriage, he was a devoted and loving husband. He earned his bachelor’s degree from John Jay College while working full time at the New York City Department of Corrections, rising to the rank of Assistant Deputy Warden. After starting a family, Ed switched gears, working in sales and management with Nationwide Insurance where he remained until retirement.
He enjoyed being a father to his three children, Nina, Brian and David. Even more so, he enjoyed being a grandfather to Decker, Ryan and Hailey. Ed was the inventor of “Bongo Ball” and a connoisseur of vintage rubbish sourced from various local neighborhood vendors. He was an avid outdoorsman and an expert marksman. A hip injury later in life prevented him from having a third career as a professional pickleball player; instead of competing at the elite level he chose to coach members of his community. Ed was a master practitioner of the art of the dad joke and later the granddad joke, always looking for a way to lighten up the room. Choosing to leave the cold behind, Ed and Helen moved south to South Carolina where they made many wonderful new friends who indoctrinated these New Yorkers into the southern way of life. He learned to love bourbon, oyster roasts, and shrimp & grits. One of his favorite haunts for a quick bite or a swirl ice cream was The Freeze, and he loved introducing anyone who visited to sample their board of fare. He had a passion for Dr Pepper, Yuengling beer, skeet shooting and family. Most importantly, his was a life well lived. Ed is survived by his wife Helen; his three children, Nina Elias (Ben), Brian (Heather) and David and three grandchildren, Decker Landesman, Ryan Elias and Hailey Elias.
