LCDR Charles D. Phillips (U.S. Navy Ret.) 76, of Summerville, husband of Dena Carol Otis Phillips, passed away Wednesday April 3, 2019.
The memorial service will be held Saturday May 11, 2019 in St. Paul's Summerville Anglican Church at two o’clock. Inurnment will follow in the churchyard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dorchester Paws, 136 Four Paws Ln, Summerville, SC 29483.
Mr. Phillips was born on January 12, 1943 in Greensboro NC, son of the late Charles Leonard Phillips and Lona Frances Worley Phillips. He received his BS from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his masters from the University of Southern California. As a young sailor in the United States Navy in the 1960’s, he was personally interviewed and selected by Admiral Hyman Rickover, father of the Navy’s nuclear submarine force, to serve in the Navy’s newly developing force. Most of his Navy career was devoted to serving his country on several nuclear submarines during the Cold War Era.
After retiring as a Lieutenant Commander, he and his wife opened one of the first computer stores in Summerville before he returned to service to the Navy as first a contractor and then a civilian employee for SPAWARSYSCEN Atlantic. He was an avid reader and puzzle solver, and enjoyed watching sports, gardening, golf, and cooking for family and friends for special gatherings.
He is survived by his loving wife Dena O. Phillips of Summerville; son Dan Phillips (Terri) of Columbia, SC; daughters Diana Londergan (Alan), Julie Londergan (Mike), Niki Bailey all of Summerville and Krista Vaughan (Thomas) of Irmo, SC; sister Dale Williams (Mike) of Apex, NC; 10 grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brother Mr. Carson Dudley.
