Michael Joseph McGuire, 70, of Hertford, NC, passed away Friday, May 4, 2018.
Mr. McGuire was born in Essex County, MA on Christmas Day in 1947, and was the son of the late Phillipe Joseph and Margret Marie Gingrass McGuire. Having a love for nature and the outdoors, as a young child he enjoyed forestry and ornamental horticulture. At the age of 14 he discovered his love of the US Navy and in a few short years followed his passion and enlisted in the Navy on July 14, 1966, where he served with honor and distinction until his retirement on June 23, 1986, having achieved the rank of Storekeeper First Class.
Prior to his retirement, he met his beloved wife, Dorothy, who had a ready-made family of five grown children and 10 grandchildren, and they were married on December 28, 1984. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he led a good life in the work of the church and with his family, keeping busy with genealogy, crafts, collections, motorcycling, and traveling. Together Michael and Dorothy rejoiced in the births of 15 great-grandchildren and mourned the lost of two grandsons.
In addition to his parents and two grandsons, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, who recently passed away and was laid to rest on their 33rd wedding anniversary.
A wonderful dad and grandpa who is respected for the life he gave in defense of our country and loved for the greater dedication of a life he chose by leading and protecting his family, he is survived by his children, Dawnalee and husband Bob, Don and wife Debi, Bonnie, Deana and husband Bruce, and Crystal; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday morning, May 12, 2018 at 10 o’clock in Summerville Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday evening from 5 until 7 o’clock at Parks Funeral Home.
