Richard J. “Buffalo” Dawson, 64, of Summerville, SC, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at his residence.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the American Heart Association, 174 East Bay St, Suite 300, Charleston, SC 29401.

Richard was born August 4, 1953 at Charleston Naval Hospital, a son of the late Walter L. Dawson, Jr. and Jennie R. Dawson. He was born the fourth of six children, and was of the Methodist faith. He graduated from Summerville High School and was successful in his plumbing career for many years. Richard came from a large family who loved him dearly, including his extended family of friends and colleagues. A gentle giant of a man, he was called “Buffalo” by many. He greatly loved and enjoyed his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. 

Richard leaves behind his daughters, Joni Hall and Julie Jaudon, both of Dublin, GA; brother, Mark W. Dawson of Summerville, SC; sisters, Andrea R. Dawson of Summerville, SC, Rachel Perlman of Madison, WI, and Cecelia Troutman of Summerville, SC; grandchildren, Jackson Hall, Jenna Jaudon, James Jaudon, and Jordan Jaudon, all of Dublin, GA; nieces, Cayce Dawson Read of Oxford, MS, Amy Berlanda, Juliette Berlanda, Natalie Berlanda, all of Summerville, SC, Sarah Dawson, Lillian Scout Maxey, both of Hernando, MS, and Charlie Bryan of Chicago, IL; and nephews, Collins Maxey of Hernando, MS, Jacob Perlman of Madison, WI, Reuven Perlman of Minneapolis, MN, Asher Perlman of Brooklyn, NY, Matthew Bogart of Summerville, SC, Charlie Pappas and Dawson Pappas, both of Memphis, TN. In addition to his parents, Richard is predeceased by a brother, Walter L. Dawson, III; nephew, Will Pappas; and his grandparents, D.A. and Gertrude Lipe, and Walter L. Dawson, Sr. and Ruth Dawson. 

Buffalo was a moral, creative, compassionate man with a great sense of humor, who never met a stranger. He will be missed by anyone honored to have met him.
