Obituary

Barbara Ann Hoyman, 80, wife of the late Scott Hoyman, of Summerville, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2023.

The relatives and friends of Barbara Hoyman are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 1:30 PM, Friday, September 8, 2023, at the graveside, Summerville Cemetery. The family will gather to greet friends and share memories from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM, Friday afternoon, at Parks Funeral Home, 130 W. 1st North Street, Summerville, SC 29483. Flowers will be accepted, however Barbara asked that friends and family consider a donation to their charity of choice in lieu of flowers.

Barbara was born in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York, on September 30, 1942. She was the daughter of Bernard and Florence Eberle. Barbara earned a Bachelor of Arts from Queens College, graduating with distinction and as a member of several academic honor societies. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Barbara dedicated her career to special education and mental disability recovery, highlighted by her work at Saint Anthony’s School for Exceptional Children in Oakmont, PA, and at the Rehabilitation Institute of Pittsburgh. She was a published author on the subject of community re-entry for head-injured adults.

Barbara relocated to Summerville in 1987 and worked as a special education teacher for over 20 years at both Macedonia High School and Stratford High School. She completed postgraduate studies at the Citadel and was featured in “Who’s Who of American Teachers.” Barbara served as both President and Treasurer of the Summerville Chapter of the American Association of University Women, and was active in the Summerville-Dorchester Museum, Friends of Summerville Library, and the Navy League of the United States. Barbara had a kind heart and giving nature and was very active with charitable organizations including Unbound (sponsorship of underprivileged children), the Humane Society, the Salvation Army, and the USO.

Barbara (our “Nana”) is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Seif, of Pretoria, South Africa; her son, Rear Admiral Richard Seif Jr., USN and daughter-in-law Erin Seif, of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; her granddaughter, Kaitlyn Bevard and her husband, Jakob Bevard, of Mystic, Connecticut; her granddaughter, Kimberly Seif, of Arlington, Virginia and her nephew, David Eberle of San Francisco, California. She was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Scott Hoyman, of Summerville and her younger brother, Mr. Robert Eberle of Summerville.
