Dorothy Miller Obituary

Dorothy “Dottie” Foster Miller, 89, widow of Daniel Foster Miller, of Summerville, passed away on September 26, 2021.

Memorial donations may be made to Agape Hospice or Alzheimer’s Association.

Dottie was born in Wilkesboro, North Carolina on April 15, 1932. She was the daughter of Berlie C. Foster and Laura Mae Foster. Dottie’s career spanned 64 years with the State of SC. Her career began at the SC Department of Transportation. In 1979, Dottie became an administrative assistant in the SC Senate. She served under two Sergeant-at-Arms, Harry Coker and Jim Melton. She had a fulfilling and rewarding career working alongside Senators for many years. She was proud to work under the supervision of Charles Williams, Sergeant-at-Arms, SC Senate. She was always very proud of the fact that she got to greet and open the door for Governor Haley. She retired in 2017. From her first time working at the state house, she loved telling us stories about being at the ready to sew on a button or hem a hem, and if you needed a rubber band, it was on her wrist. She was equally as talented at milking a cow as she was at helping to plan and execute an elegant, elaborate event. She hosted her nieces and nephews in Columbia and created a marvelous and fun time for all of them who could come. Her favorite team was the South Carolina Gamecock Girls Basketball team and she was proud to be friends with A’ja Wilson. So many of us remember the haunted house, leprechaun towels and moss beds in the woods, water skiing, horseback riding, dressing up for the parade and her love for shopping and clothes. She took Frances for a weeks long tour of DC.

She loved attending family reunions and events. She was beautiful and would do anything for you. As a matter of fact, Dottie took in her nephew David and her brother, Alvin, to live with her for a while, when they needed to. She had so many funny stories and was so much fun. She inspired all of those she touched to reach for the stars.

Dottie is survived by her sister, Frances Dare Foster-Johnson; her brother, Alvin Eli Foster (Colleen); nieces, Frances Tucker, Debbie Sueverkruepp, Ruth Hysell and Teresa Foster, and her nephews, Tommy Johnson, Kenneth Johnson and Eric Foster. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Foster Miller; her parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; her brother, Taft Berlie Foster; sisters, Valerie Blanche Evans, Roxie Ann Anderson and Bertha Jane Tugman; brothers in law, Haze Johnson, Fred Evans, Bud Tugman and Ronnie Anderson, as well as a nephew, Wayne Foster. Although she never had children of her own, she developed special loving and caring bonds with all who knew her including her step sons, Steve and David, their families, and especially her niece, Vicky Lynn.
