Douglas Burgreen Obituary

Douglas Alan Burgreen — known to all who loved him as Doug — passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on August 18, 1952, in Fairmont, West Virginia, Doug carried the heart of a West Virginian throughout his entire life, even as he built a remarkable and deeply rooted life in Summerville, South Carolina, where he and his family settled 44 years ago.

Doug and his beloved wife, Wilma Ford Burgreen, were married in 1970, building a partnership of love, faith, and family that spanned more than five decades. Together they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to one another and to those around them.

A man of deep faith, Doug was a longtime and faithful member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, where he served with distinction as Church Council President. His faith was not merely a Sunday commitment — it was the foundation of everything he did and every life he touched.

Doug was a gifted and respected General Contractor who built his career on integrity, craftsmanship, and hard work. His company, Liberty Construction, earned regional distinction in 2009 when it was awarded 14th place in the Roaring 20's Fastest Growing Company in the region. Liberty Construction also received the prestigious PACE Award and was recognized in several contractor trade publications — honors that reflected Doug's relentless dedication to excellence in his craft.

Doug gave generously of his time and talents to his community. He served on the board of directors of the YMCA and was a devoted coach across a wide range of youth sports, including T-ball, baseball, basketball, softball, B-team sports at Summerville High School, and as an assistant soccer coach. Whether on the diamond, the court, or the field, Doug poured his heart into every young athlete in his care. He treasured hearing from and seeing his former players throughout the years, and they never forgot him.

Beyond his professional and community endeavors, Doug loved life fully. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who found peace and joy in the outdoors. He was rarely found far from a good book, and he had a well-known passion for true crime programming. In the fall on Saturdays and Sundays, he cheered passionately for his South Carolina Gamecocks and Washington Redskins, and nothing brought him greater joy than attending Atlanta Braves games — a love he shared with those closest to him. He was an enthusiastic traveler who treasured the experiences and memories made on the road. Year after year, Doug and the family made cherished traditions of attending the annual Charleston Christmas Show and the Turkey Banquet — gatherings that marked the seasons and deepened the bonds of family life.

Above all else, Doug Burgreen was the hardest working man those who knew him had ever seen — dedicated to God, committed to his family, and generous with his time, wisdom, and love. His great-grandchild Oliver always made his Papaw smile, a joy that spoke to the fullness of a life well and lovingly lived.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Wilma Ford Burgreen, originally of Fairmont, WV, of Summerville, SC; son, Alan Burgreen (Caroline) of Daniel Island, SC; daughter, Elizabeth Burgreen Spears (Chris) of Summerville, SC; grandchildren: Christopher, Kaylee (Dyllon), and Emily (Cody); great-grandchild, Oliver, who always made his Papaw smile; and a loving circle of extended family and dear friends whose lives are forever richer for having known him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Carl Burgreen and MaraBelle Tucker Burgreen of Fairmont, WV; paternal grandparents, Leon Carl Burgreen and Georgia Ellen Fullen Burgreen of Grafton, WV; maternal grandparents, Fred Homer Tucker and Icie Lena Abel Tucker of Fairmont, WV; brother, Carl Reuben Burgreen (Brenda) of Fairmont, WV; and sister, Nancy Luellen Burgreen Gilder (Edward) of North Charleston, SC.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 11 o’clock at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 206 Central Ave, Summerville, SC 29483. The family will receive friends for a special lunch in at the church directly after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to the American Lung Association (www.lung.org) or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org) in honor of Doug's memory.
