James Duncan Obituary

James Allen Duncan, affectionately known as “Skip” of Summerville, SC passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 5 o’clock at Parks Funeral Home, 130 West 1st North Street, Summerville, SC 29483. The family will receive friends an hour before the service for a visitation.

James “Skip” was born on October 6, 1953 in Charleston, SC. Son of the late James P. Duncan and Camilla Jones Duncan. He attended and graduated from Middleton High School in 1973. In 1974, Skip began his long career with St. Andrews PSD Fire Department. He loved serving beside his brothers at the fire department and would consider them all family. Skip was soon promoted to engineer and maintained that position until his retirement. Skip could tell you everything about his engine and would talk endlessly about it to anyone who would listen. Skip received the nickname “Horse” by his fellow brothers at the firehouse and he graciously accepted it. He spent many years serving and protecting his community, alongside his fire department brothers. In the end, he always knew the hard work he put into his job was rewarding. Skip was also an avid collector with a keen interest in stamps, rare coins, sports memorabilia and any antiques that offered him a window into history; he also enjoyed fishing and camping.

Skip is survived by his son, Brandon Allen Duncan; sisters, Therese Duncan Selbee, Nancy Walsh; a special niece, Amber Jones; close family friends, Jill C. Weeks, Denise W. McEwan; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James P. Duncan and Camilla Jones Duncan; brother, David Duncan; sisters, Sandra Inabinett, and Cathie Kidrick.

One of the greatest joys in Skip's life was becoming a dad to his son, Brandon. He has spent every day of his life loving and cherishing him. Skip was never shy about telling everyone he met, what a proud father he was.

Skip had a contagious smile, funny sense of humor and would light up any room he entered. He never judged people, no matter who you were or where you came from. He would give you his last of anything or just be that person who never left your side in your time of need. Skips warmth, humor and engaging spirit will be deeply missed. He leaves a legacy of kindness, strength and a willingness to serve others. His memory will forever hold a cherished place in the heart of those he touched throughout his life.
