Jimmy was born on January 19, 1947, in Kingstree, SC, and is the eldest son of the late Jimmy Session Mitchum, Sr, and Ruby Bunch Mitchum. Jimmy was one of the brightest lights and kindest souls to walk this earth, and he truly blessed everyone’s life that he entered. Jimmy also loved with his whole heart; he loved his family and his friends profoundly. In his early years, he served in the 10th Engineer Battalion 3rd Infantry Division in the United States Army. Following his service, he played a medley of sports, including softball, until he began his coaching career in youth football and boxing, where he coached his two sons. Jimmy also worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, where he met his wife. After its closing in 1996, Jimmy promptly relocated to Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Georgia to continue his career as a Crane and Rigging Superintendent. After he retired from Kings Bay in 2014, he began spending more time with his daughter, friends, and two dogs that he treated like his own children. During this, he was also able to devote more time to his hobbies, like hunting, fishing, and traveling around the Lowcountry for lunch with his good friends. Jimmy also had time to finally ride his Harley to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally a few times.
All of his family and friends will deeply miss Jimmy.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Leslie H. Mitchum of North Charleston; daughter, Caroline D. Mitchum of North Charleston; sons, Jimmy S. Mitchum, III and Mark A.
