Jo Carol Owens

Jo Carol Owens, age 87, went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 20, 2024.

Jo Carol was born on February 7, 1937, in Mt. Ulla, North Carolina, the child of the late Clay Edward and Mary (Lipe) Graham. She was raised in Mt Ulla and attended Mt. Ulla High School. Jo Carol graduated from Lowrance Hospital’s Nursing Program and was a nurse for more than 50 years, providing care, compassion, and love to all of her patients.

Jo Carol met her future husband, Edwin Owens, when they were both in the first grade. They dated in their teen years, marrying in August 1958 once she and Edwin graduated college. They began their married life in Manteo, North Carolina, moving to Summerville, South Carolina, in 1960.

Jo Carol began working at Dorchester County Hospital in 1961 and became the Assistant Supervisor of Nursing in 1971. She moved into private practice in 1973 and worked 15 years with Dr. Reid Wyly. She then supported Dr. David Castellone when he acquired Dr. Wyly’s practice in 1988 until her retirement.

Jo Carol loved the outdoors, spending many hours tending her yard and flowers, and all animals, particularly dogs. She adored her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Molly and River, who she is joyfully reunited with in heaven. Throughout her nursing career, she had the opportunity to care for many people who benefited from her knowledge and loving nature and was known as “Nurse Jo” throughout the community.

Jo Carol is survived by her husband of 66 years, Edwin Owens, daughters Cathy (Bob) Quinn and Donna (Ben) Cox, her grandchildren Lindsay (Ben) Kubaryk and Daniel Sasser, step-granddaughter Sarah Quinn, her sister-in-law Martha Graham, and several nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Billy Graham and Paul Graham, and her sister Norma Barber.

The family will receive visitors at Parks Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 23, at 11:00 a.m. at Summerville Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private.

Donations in memory of Jo Carol may be made to Summerville Presbyterian Church or Dorchester Paws. Flowers will be accepted.
