Lola was born in Hemingway, South Carolina on July 24th, 1937 to the late Pearl Hanna Cantey and Julius Lucian Cantey. She was raised on her family’s farm in Hemingway and graduated from Hemingway High School in 1955.

Lola graduated from Palmer College and St. Francis Hospital School of Radiologic Technologist. She worked at Roper and Dorchester County Hospitals as an x-ray technician. In the 1980’s, she worked as a secretary at Carter Electronics Co. with her husband, Aubrey.

Lola lived a life dedicated to serving others. Taking care of her family and serving God through a variety of ministries at Bethany United Methodist Church were her top priorities. She worked with the Girl Scouts of America, the local YWCA, was an aide at the library in Rollings Elementary School, and delivered food to others for Meals on Wheels. The relationships Lola and Aubrey formed with the senior high youth at Bethany UMC as counselors for over 30 years, were some of her most cherished memories. Youth retreats to Camp Cleveland in the fall were extra special. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Women, serving as the Treasurer for over 20 years. Her name was added to her Circle, after dedicating many years of service, making it The Davis Meyer-Carter Circle. In addition to her dedication to her community, Lola enjoyed soaking up the sun, playing bridge with friends, and making sourdough bread and cinnamon rolls for everyone to enjoy.

Lola was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, William Aubrey Carter; her parents, Julius Lucian Cantey and Pearl Hanna Cantey; her sister, Patricia Cantey Johnson; and her child, William Aubrey Carter, Jr..
