Martha Fulton Obituary

Martha Ione Reece Fulton died in Summerville, SC on August 28, 2024.

Martha (Marty) was born December 31, 1932 in Chanute, Kansas, one of 7 children born to Homer and Marie Largent. She was the first in her family to receive a college degree, graduating with a bachelor’s degree at Wichita State University followed by various jobs teaching English to Junior high school students. The first of these was in Corpus Christi, TX, where she met and married Capt. EM Fulton. The couple welcomed their only child, Elizabeth into the world on September 26, 1960.

Several years (and military postings) later, Marty returned to her studies at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia where she received her master’s degree in library science, with a specialization in young adult literature. Following several years as a librarian at schools in the Norfolk area, she was the librarian at the Washington Academy of Ballet in Washington DC.

Marty traveled the world while stationed in both London and Rome with her husband during his latter active-duty military service. Capt. EM Fulton, when stationed in London, served as the staff judge advocate for the Commander in Chief of US forces in Europe, Admiral Hays. While stationed in Rome, Marty was the assistant for commercial services at the embassy. Following her husband’s retirement the couple settled in Lincoln, IL where they remained for the following 35 years.

During the 35 years in Lincoln, using a librarians’ skill she researched her and EM's family’s genealogical history, often choosing vacation destinations that would provide access to further information from visits to town halls, libraries and grave sites across multiple destinations in the US and Europe. In Lincoln she was also active in Book Club and the Investment Club.

In 2016 Marty and EM embarked upon their final relocation, traveling to the Charleston area of South Carolina, first residing in Mt. Pleasant and later moving to Summerville.

In addition to her husband of 64 years, Capt. Elbert Martin Fulton, Jr. of Summerville, SC, Marty leaves behind her daughter, Elizabeth Fulton of Zurich, Switzerland, and grandson, Liam Hogan. She is predeceased by her parents, Homer Reece and Marie Largent.

Memorial Services will be Saturday morning, September 7, 2024 at 11 o’clock at Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street, Charleston, SC. Flowers are accepted, or donations in Marty’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society by visiting donate.cancer.org or by calling 1-800-227-2345.

Arrangements by PARKS FUNERAL HOME, 130 W. 1st North Street, Summerville, SC 29483. www.parksfuneralhome.com.
