Mary Suzanne "Suzie" Townsend

Mary Suzanne “Suzie” Townsend, 71, passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. 

Suzie was born on October 17, 1952, to the late Ray and Mary Cox in Hope Mills, NC. Suzie grew up in Macon, GA, where she attended public schools and graduated from Miller-Lanier High School. In 1973, she earned her degree from Georgia College in Milledgeville and began teaching elementary education at the young age of 20, joining a long line of family teachers and educators. Her friends and family loved Suzie for her joyful spirit and infectious laughter. She cherished her family and took immense pride in her children and granddaughter. 

Although Suzie spent much of her adult life in Maryland, her heart always remained in the Deep South. She was so happy to return "home" to Summerville, SC, when her husband, EC, retired in 2015. An avid golfer from a family of enthusiasts, Suzie shared her love of the game with her devoted husband, EC. She enjoyed participating in casual tournaments with her husband and family matches against her younger brothers. 

Suzie is survived by her husband, EC Townsend; her daughter, Jaime Stup (John) of Baltimore, MD; her son, Jordan Moore of Summerville, SC; her granddaughter, Morgan Moore of Baltimore, MD; and her brothers, Raymond “Chipper” Cox of Little Rock, AR and Samuel Cox (Candace) of Greenville, SC. 

A private family celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 17. In honor of Suzanne's memory and love, the family requests that charitable donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (http://alz.org/) or Agape Care South Carolina https://www.hpcfoundation.org/online
