Mary Elizabeth Wood Meynardie, 98, wife of the late Robert Ellis Meynardie, of Summerville, passed away on July 18th, 2023.
The relatives and friends of Mary Elizabeth Wood Meynardie are invited to attend her Memorial Service at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 12, 2023, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 206 Central Ave., Summerville, SC 29483. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Friday evening, August 11, 2023, at Parks Funeral Home, 130 W. 1st. North Street, Summerville, SC, 29483. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.
Mary Elizabeth Wood was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on November 4, 1924. She was the daughter of William Joseph Wood and Dora Adeline Witt Wood. She was a graduate of North Charleston High School and Winthrop University, Biblical Seminary (Masters), Yale Language School and Toledo University (doctorate). Mary served as a Lutheran Missionary to Japan from 1948 – 1962. She taught at Chicora High School, North Charleston High School, The American School in Japan, DeVilbiss High School, Maumee Valley Country Day School, New York Military Academy and Storm King School, where she was Dean of Students. After retirement she and her husband, Bob worked with the American Red Cross for over 10 years, crisscrossing the country to help after hurricane and flood disasters. She also joined St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Summerville and worked tirelessly as a volunteer.
Surviving are her daughters; Joy Meynardie Derrick of Summerville, Betsy Meynardie (Julia) of Deale, Maryland; sons, Robert Ashley Meynardie (Catherine) of Raleigh, NC and John Arthur Meynardie (Jane) of Biloxi, MS; grandchildren, Jenna Derrick Cartee (Jeremy), Jeff Derrick (Stephanie), Chloe Meynardie, Dahlia Meynardie, William Meynardie, Elizabeth Meynardie, Margaret Meynardie and Ellie Meynardie; great grandchildren, Eden Cartee and Lucas Cartee along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Ellis Meynardie and son-in-law, Jeff Derrick.
