Olin McCurry Obituary

Olin Johnston McCurry, 91, beloved husband of the late Rose McNeill McCurry, entered eternity December 27, 2023. Born April 16, 1932, in Abbeville, SC, Olin served in the Air Force during the Korean War, graduated from Newberry Collegewhere he played tackle for both offense and defense earning a place in the Newberry Athletic Hall of Fame, and achieved amaster’s in education administration from Western Carolina University. He served Dorchester County School District 2 from 1957-1984 as a history and science teacher, Summerville High School coach in track, field, and football (19 years), principal of Spann Junior High, Summerville High, and DD2 adult education, and many years as Associate Superintendent.

A committed Christian, Olin was a faithful member of the Sue Knight Sunday School class at Bethany United Methodist Church since 1957 where he served and shared his gifts. Inspired by his mother, Olin sought to follow Christ by how he lived. He was a role model of unwavering faith, love, and integrity. He selflessly served those around him as an educator, coach, mentor, and member of the Summerville community, but most of all, as an unabashedly devoted husband and as a wise, loving, engaged, and present father and grandfather.

Olin’s passion for living and learning never waned even as the years advanced, and coupled with an adventurous nature, he took Rose, (and sometimes family or dear friends) to see all over the nation he loved and the world. He shared his love of naturewith his children and grandchildren, taking them fishing, hunting, water and snow skiing, and providing them places where they could fully experience and enjoy the beauty of the lake, ocean, and mountains.

Even in his last weeks, nearly blind, weak, and bedridden, Olin thanked the Lord for salvation and countless blessings to him and his family—including Rose, a lovely in every way and perfect life partner, four close, loving, and healthy children, 11 grandchildren who brought him great joy and pride, his first two beautiful great grandchildren, and a long life of sound mind, health, and legendary strength, the miraculous outcome of his mother’s desperate, faith-filled prayer for her toddler who was near death after drinking kerosene.

Memorial services will be Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Bethany United Methodist Church. Visitation at 10:00 will be followed by the service at 11:00. The family requests that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Northwest Lowcountry, serving Dorchester County, at my.fca.org/michaelknotts) or Epworth Children’s Home (send to Bethany United Methodist with Epworth written on the check memo line).

Survivors include four children: Laura McCurry Knotts (Michael) of Summerville; Rose McCurry Fout (Preston) of Summerton; Olin Thomas McCurry (Jill) of Summerville; Frank Compton McCurry (Caroline) of Summerville; 11 grandchildren: Steven McCurry Knotts, Rosie Knotts, Charlie Fout, Charlotte Fout, Marie Fout, Johnston McCurry (Whitney), Mac McCurry (Maggie), Hundley McCurry, Olin McCurry, Graham McCurry, Campbell McCurry, two great grandchildren: Isla McCurry, and Crue McCurry.

Olin was predeceased by Rose, his cherished wife for 62 years, his parents, Compton Ulis and Nellie Holmes McCurry, and two brothers, Thomas McCurry and Lucius McCurry.
