Richard “Rick” K. Sparger, 80, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2023, in his own home. He was born to parents Howard Sparger and Margaret Akin Sparger on April 11, 1943, in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
Rick met Katherine “Kit” Rudisill in 1967. On October 5, 1968, in Columbia, SC they joyfully became Mr. & Mrs. Sparger. Together they had and raised two sons- Rick Jr. and Johnny. They have remained married for over 55 years.
Rick had a very long and distinguished military career. For over 32 years he served his country proudly and eventually retired from the US Navy in 1993. He served in the US Navy from 1961 – 1993. Accomplished rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer and served on several submarines such as SS-564, SSN-603, SSN-660, SSN- 682. He became Submarine Qualified in 1965 on the USS Trigger (SS-564)
Rick was a Life Member of the US Submarine Veteran Association-Charleston Base since 2003 and was inducted into the Holland Club in 2015. He was also an active member of The Fleet Reserve Association
In his free time Rick enjoyed various hobbies including hunting, fishing, and bird watching and passionately following Oklahoma Sooners as well as the Carolina Gamecocks Football Teams. His love for these activities and many more brought him great joy throughout his entire life.
Rick is survived by his wife, Kit. His son Rick (Eve) Sparger from Moncks Corner, SC. His brothers Howard (Stella) Sparger from St. Mary’s, GA, and Joe (Sherrie) Sparger from Midwest City, OK. Also survived by two grandchildren Jonathon (Caroline) Johnson and Sarah Elizabeth Sparger.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Harryette Lee Craig and Rita Anne Tanner. Painfully predeceased by his son- Johnny in 2015
The family has entrusted Parks Funeral Home with the final arrangements.
A Remembrance Service is scheduled for Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 2:00 PM. Location at 130 W. First North St, in Summerville, SC. Private Burial to follow.
