Robert B. Belk, MD

Robert B. Belk, MD, 84, of Summerville, SC, husband of Ruth Peterson Belk, departed from this life on Saturday, August 19, 2023.

Funeral Services will be in Parks Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday morning, August 24, 2023 at 11 o’clock. Visitation will be from 10 o’clock until the time of service. Burial will be at a later date in Piney Grove Cemetery in Swannanoa, NC.

After graduating from the Medical College of Virginia in 1964, Bob married Ruth Peterson of Greenwood, then completed his internship and residency at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, becoming a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He served 2 years in the Air Force before moving to Anderson SC in 1970 to open his medical practice in OB-GYN. Bob served on many hospital committees and was the president of the Independent Physicians Organization. After nearly 40 years of practice he retired in 2009.

Bob was a thoughtful, caring person; devoted to his family, church and patients. He spent the summers on Lake Hartwell swimming and sailing with his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed playing golf and tennis with friends. As a founding member of New Covenant Church PCA, he taught Sunday school, led Bible studies and went on mission trips to Jamaica and Peru. One of his favorite ministries in Anderson was New Mercies, a recovery home for men with addictions, giving them help with education and hope for a future.

Preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Lawrence Belk D.DIV and Gertrude W. Belk, and his brother William W. Belk MD, Bob leaves behind his wife, Ruth of Summerville, SC, his sons, Robert B. Belk Jr. (Denise) of Greenville SC, David H. Belk (Marsha) of Louisville KY, daughter Lynn Belk McClary and husband James of Summerville, SC, Mrs. Lucy Belk of Pensacola FL, brother Samuel Lawrence Belk Jr. (Carolyn) of Gainesville, VA; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
