Robert Ryan Obituary

Robert M. Ryan, 62, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on June 15, 2026, after a brief illness.

Born on October 16, 1963, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Robert dedicated his life to serving his community and preserving its history. He graduated from Thomas Heyward Academy in Ridgeland, South Carolina, before attending the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Following graduation, Robert began a distinguished career in public service. He served as Director of Disaster Preparedness and later County Administrator for Jasper County. He then worked as an aide to Congressman Arthur Ravenel before joining the Charleston Naval Complex Redevelopment Authority. Through years of dedicated service, Robert eventually became Executive Director of the Redevelopment Authority, a position he held until his retirement in 2023.

Throughout his career, Robert oversaw numerous redevelopment and preservation projects that left a lasting impact on the Charleston area. Among the projects closest to his heart were the restoration of the Admiral’s House, Quarters F, Quarters H & I,and the Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel at the former Charleston Naval Base. His leadership and vision helped preserve these historic landmarks for future generations.

Outside of his career, Robert had a deep love for South Carolina history. He spent much of his free time metal detecting at historic sites, searching for and preserving relics from the past. His appreciation for history, and respect for preservation were a meaningful part of who he was.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Michelle Ryan; his children, Jasper Ryan and Keely Ryan; his parents, Billy and Nell Ryan; his brother, Ryder (Marci)  nephews Cameron (Mary Caroline) and Clayton (Raquel); multiple extended family members, colleagues, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Racheal Ryan.

A visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 12:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 1:00 p.m. at the Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel, 1097 Navy Way, North Charleston, South Carolina 29405.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
