Sloan Joshua Kalina, 49, of Summerville, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

Sloan was born on August 5, 1976, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Les and Sara Kalina. On July 21, 1994, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, dedicating nearly 20 years of service before retiring on August 31, 2014. Sloan truly loved serving his country and took great pride in his work in Security Forces, including his time as a military dog handler. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued his commitment to public service by spending the next 10 years working in investigations at the Naval Weapons Station, where he built lasting friendships and earned the respect of those he worked alongside.

Outside of his career, Sloan was a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes — always cheering “Go Hawks!” — And rarely missed rooting for the Patriots. He was known for enjoying a Miller Lite or a whiskey and Coke Zero while surrounded by family and friends. More than anything, Sloan will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality and his ability to make everyone feel welcome. He never met a stranger, and if you didn’t know him at the start of the evening, chances are you’d leave calling him a friend. His laughter, kindness, and unforgettable spirit made him the life of every gathering. Sloan will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Sloan is survived by his fiancé, Lisa Peele of Summerville, SC; parents, Les and Sara Kalina of Summerville, SC; sister, Shanna Smith (Michael) of Summerville, SC;  stepchildren, Jasmine C.
