Stewart Joseph Laing



Stewart Joseph Laing, 89, of Summerville passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 11, 2023.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 11:00 at Summerville Cemetery, 1128 Boonehill Road, Summerville, SC 29483. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers https://www.alz.org.

Stewart was born on June 20, 1933 and is the son of the late James A and Margaret Romayne (Allen) Laing. He grew up on a Farm in Meridale, NY and on November 7, 1951 Stewart enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for 20 years. After retiring from the USAF he went to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard for another 20 years working as an Industrial Hygienist in Preventive Medicine.

He met his wife, Joan Marjorie Kirchner in September of 1952 and they were married three months later. They were happily married for 53 years before her death in 2006. They had five children and later 12 Grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren. He was an amazing father and a wonderful, very involved Grandfather.  He also enjoyed gardening, fishing and genealogy.

Stewart is survived by his sons Brent Stewart Laing and James Anthony Laing and his daughters Belinda Simmons and Christine Craven, along with his 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife Joan Laing and daughter Becky Barnhill.
