Susan Rison, a beloved wife, mother, sister, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2025, surrounded by her family, held in love. She was 78 years old.
Born and raised in North Charleston, South Carolina, by her parents John and Lila Smith, Susan lived a life rooted in kindness, compassion, and dedication to others.
She dedicated more than 30 years to education, serving as teacher and assistant principal at Summerville High School in Summerville, South Carolina. Through her work, she touched the lives of countless students, families, and colleagues, offering support, wisdom, and encouragement every step of the way. She was deeply respected for her leadership, her patience, and her unwavering belief in the potential of every student.
At home, Susan was the heart of her family, and loved nothing more than entertaining and hosting family and friends. She raised her children with love and humor, and created a home filled with warmth and understanding. She cherished books, and music — especially the songs of her formative years, the music of the 60s and 70s, and the hymns that brought her comfort — and the simple joys of time spent with those she loved, including her beloved pets.
Even through the challenges of later years, Susan remained fiercely independent and deeply connected to her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband, David Rison; her children, John Rison (Roseanne Liberti) and Jennifer Rison; her grandchildren, Samantha, Gracen and Weslyn Rison (of whom she was especially proud); and her sister, Cindy Stukes; and many dear friends and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lila Smith, and her brother, Greg Smith.
A memorial service will be held on May 12, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Circular Congregational Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where family and friends will gather to celebrate her life and honor her memory.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dorchester Paws or Katie’s Krops.
