Thomas Lester Ilderton

Thomas Lester Ilderton, 85, of Charleston, SC, husband of Janice Powell Ilderton, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, December 12, 2021. His graveside funeral service will be held Thursday afternoon, December 16, 2021 at 1 o’clock in Summerville Cemetery, 642 Boone Hill Road.

Tom was born December 22, 1935 in Charleston, SC, son and youngest of eight children of the late Wilson Thomas Ilderton and Mamie Lee Neetles Ilderton. He is a graduate of Palmer Business College with a degree in economics, in addition to a various course work at the University of South Carolina and University of Georgia. Tom attended several local schools in Charleston including Porter Military Academy. Here, he continued service in the founding of Porter Military Alumni Association as a charter member and recipient of various recognitions for his service to the restoration of St. Luke’s Chapel at MUSC, Reverend Toomer Porter’s statue, and the gates on the current campus of Porter Gaud School. He was the division manager of Sears and Roebuck; he worked as the Interim Director of the Charleston Tax Assessors Office and later was the owner of T.L. Ilderton Realty and Construction Company. Tom was a member of several organizations including West Ashley Citivan Club, Society of Real Estate Appraisers, Charleston Library Society, Charleston Historical Society, Ashley Marina, Charleston Country Club, Charleston Shag Club, and many other organizations. He attended Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served as Junior Warden in years past. Tom enjoyed sailing, participating in horse shows, flying private planes, developing and subdividing land, researching Charleston’s history, and investing in local real estate.

Tom is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janice Powell Ilderton; daughter, Julie Ilderton Murden (Herman); grandson, Andrew Quinton Murden (Valerie); and great-grandson, Andy Murden. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by all of his siblings. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Tom’s name may be made to Porter Gaud School at 300 Albemarle Road, Charleston, SC 29407.
