Wiley Johnson Obituary

William Wiley Johnson, 75, of Summerville, SC entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Wiley was born in Augusta, Georgia on January 22, 1949 and is survived by his wife of 33 years, Susan Ramsey Johnson of Summerville, SC; brother, Dr. Walter Edwin Johnson, Jr. (Jeannie) of Augusta, GA; sisters-in-laws, Anita Ramsey Alexander of Summerville, SC, Edith Ramsey Livengood of Sumter, SC; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and his beloved dog, Summer. He is predeceased by his father, Walter Edwin Johnson, Sr. and his mother, Elizabeth Wiley Johnson.

Wiley graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in chemistry and enjoyed cheering on the Bulldog football team. He was a man of many interests and talents such as woodworking, hunting, traveling, problem solving, history and technology.

He loved his country and community and generously gave of himself to serve and support them. Wiley served in the Air Force for 24 years as a C141 Pilot flying missions worldwide and also as an Airforce Reserve Pilot. During his military service, he received numerous awards and metals, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.  After retiring from the Air Force he flew as a Commercial Airlines Captain with several major airlines and retired from Continental Airlines in 2008.

He was a member of the Summerville Baptist Church and involved in many civic and community groups to include being a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion and The Summerville Preservation Society.

Wiley believed that positive change starts at home and for that reason he chose to run for Mayor of Summerville during his retirement years.

Highlights from his career include serving as a Peace Keeper for the United Nations in Syria and Lebanon, serving as a Flight Deck Officer when flying as a commercial pilot and serving as the Mayor of Summerville from 2016 to 2019.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 21, 2024 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Parks Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Summerville Baptist Church with burial to follow at Summerville Cemetery.

Wiley will be remembered as a man who lived his life with courage and dignity.
