Winnie Harris Obituary

Winnie B. Harris, 93, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at her home in the Village of Summerville. Winnie was born in Greenville, North Carolina on May 3, 1928. She was the daughter of Tarshie Hobgood Forlines and David Forlines of Winterville, North Carolina.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Dorchester Presbyterian Church. Winnie graduated from high school in 1945 from Belvoir High School and was valedictorian of her class. Immediately upon graduating, she left home for Washington D.C. to pursue her first job working with the FBI. Winnie remained in the Washington D.C. area where she continued to work in the area of finance. It was there where she met her first husband, Everett Burrell. They married in 1949 and had a son, Michael W. Burrell. She remained in the area and continued to work in finance and title processing. It was during this time that she was taken in by Lillian Childress and family which afforded her the opportunity to continue working as this family offered great support for the next three years. Winnie met her second, Bruce C. Harris in 1953 and they were married in 1954. Together, they had two children, David A. Harris in 1956 and her daughter, Bonnie D. Harris in 1964. Their family also included her step son, Bruce C. Harris, Jr.

Winnie’s devotion to her church and the Eastern Star never deviated throughout her entire life, whether in the Washington D.C. area or in Summerville, South Carolina. She received her 25-year service award from the Eastern Star in 1998 and reached her pinnacle there by becoming a Worthy Matron. Her church work also continued when she moved to Summerville in 1995 and immediately joined the Dorchester Presbyterian Church where she also remained active until her death. While being a member there, she earned her Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding service. In addition to this, she volunteered at Summerville Medical Center for 19 years.

She is survived by her sons, Michael Burrell (Honey) and David Harris (Pamela); her daughter, Bonnie H. Langendorff (Matt); her step son, Bruce C. Harris, Jr. and her grandchildren, Zoe Langendorff, Troy Langendorff, Kyra Langendorff, Ashley Burrell and Tarshie B. Wegmann (Tyler). She was predeceased by her sister, Sallie Musselwhite and her brothers, Pete, Maynard, Earle, Leonard lee and Emmis Forlines.
