Nancy (Hunter) Watts

July 12, 1928 ~ December 1, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Nancy Hunter Watts, 89, of Summerville, SC, widow of Major General David E. Watts, passed away from complications after a prolonged illness on Friday, December 1, 2017 at her residence.

Funeral Services will be Friday morning, December 22, 2017 at 11 o’clock at St. Paul’s Summerville. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Churchyard. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock at Parks Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted.

Nancy was born July 12, 1928 in Providence, RI, a daughter of the late James Worthington Hunter and Mary “Mo” Livingston Duckworth Hunter. She served as a US Army Officer’s wife for thirty-four years. Her career and responsibilities took her to nineteen geographic assignments throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. In addition to building a home in new locations, she was a gourmet cook and an avid host for countless social functions; hosting parties and banquets for heads of state and other dignitaries to include President Gerald Ford. In addition to her numerous social and civic responsibilities she volunteered as Den Mother for Cub Scouts and a Red Cross Volunteer at military community hospitals while raising six children.

Upon moving to Summerville after her husband, David, retired as a Major General, she volunteered for numerous community activities. She served for many years at the Kiwanis Hamburger Stand Annual Flower Town Festival and weekly at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, including the Church Craft Guild. Her continuous support and encouragement for her husband was instrumental; undoubtingly assisting him in receiving The Order of the Palmetto from South Carolina Governor Carroll Campbell on 16 June 1994.  Throughout her life, Nancy Watts served her husband, her family, community, and nation by giving both her time and energy, and generous portions of her personal fortune.

Nancy Hunter Watts is predeceased by her husband, David Edward Watts and survived by her sister, Betsy Hunter Ambach of Susan, Virginia; four sons, Christopher H. Watts of Lawrence, Kansas, Chief Warrant Officer Five (ret) Bruce R. Watts of Loganville, Georgia, Chief Warrant Officer Four (ret) David D. Watts of Summerville, Matthew R. Watts of Summerville, and two daughters, Carolyn Monaghan of Summerville, and Mary Watts of Tampa, Florida. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
